Bedingfield family Civil War letters, 1837, 1861-1865, 1936.

The collection consists chiefly of letters from John Y. Robert E. and Lewis H. Bedingfield to their parents. The brothers send news of family and friends; describe camp life including drills, meals, tents, religious services, and trade with Union soldiers; and relay war news and rumors. There are comments on General John B. Magruder; enlistment ceremony and rifle distribution; bombardment of Fort Walker (Welles) and the fall of Fort Pulaski; high prices; the fatal wounding of Lewis at Gaines Mill; the fatal wounding and capture of Sim Thews at Gettysburg; depression of Confederate soldiers after seeing the prosperity of Pennsylvania; overrating of J.E.B. Stuart; salvaging iron from destroyed railroads; attempt to hire "Wallace" as a servant as it is "utterly imossible to get along well without a negroe"; an encounter with a Union soldier during Mine Run; execution of a deserter; reflections on Christmas, 1863; skirmish at Morton's Ford on the Rapidan; re-enlistment; Cedar Creek at which his cook Joe Goings was mortally wounded; Fisher's Hill; and thoughts on Lincoln's re-election and the continuation of the war. A fragment of a letter from W. Bedingfield mentions an encounter with a Union deserter, and another, 1864, describes life at home in Brooks County. An 1862 letter from family friend Joshua Thews mentions destroying the railroad from Staunton to Manasses. An 1863 letter from a friend in Montezuma, Ga., describes Christmas despite the blockade.
